Writer's Digest Books is the book-publishing arm of Writer's Digest, the longest-running American magazine for working writers, founded in 1920 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Writer's Digest Books has been the single most influential publisher of writing-craft reference titles for English-language writers across the past half-century, publishing the Howdunit series (mystery and crime reference), the Elements of Fiction Writing series (Conflict and Suspense, Characters and Viewpoint, Setting, Dialogue, and others), the Science Fiction Writing series (Aliens and Alien Societies, Space Travel, World-Building), the Write Great Fiction series, the Books Writers Use reference library, and many other working-writer reference titles. It was acquired by F+W Media and then by Active Interest Media.
Among its working authors are Lawrence Block, James Scott Bell, Donald Maass, Hallie Ephron, Steven James, Jordan Rosenfeld, Mary Buckham, Ron Rozelle, Renni Browne, Dave King, William Noble, Russell L. Bintliff, Sean P. Mactire, Serita Stevens, Stephen Lee Gillett, and dozens of other writing-craft authors whose books have been continuously in print for two or three decades.
