Taking a thing you understand so well you have forgotten it was ever hard, and laying it out so a reader gets it without quitting on page nine. The best surgeon in your city probably cannot write a readable chapter to save his life, and that is fine, because cutting people open and writing books have nothing to do with each other. The expertise that makes you worth reading and the craft that makes you readable almost never live in the same person. When they do, that person does not need me. Think about how a journalist works, because it is the same machinery. They find the people who did, ask the right questions, and turn the answers into something a stranger can follow. Nobody reads that story and complains the reporter is not a surgeon. The car dealer made it even clearer. He had zero problem with me not knowing his business, because he understood he was the expert. His field was narrow, with no other experts to compete with his view of it, so he simply trained me on it and we built the book. He did not want a writer who already knew the car business. He wanted a writer who would get his version of it onto the page, and a writer who walked in thinking he already knew the business would have argued with him instead of listening.

When I write for coaches, it runs the same way and gets more specific. The coach walks me through their process step by step. Often they hand me the personality test or assessment they put clients through, have me take it myself, then sit down and review my results with me as if I were the client. By the end I understand their method from the inside, not as a description but as an experience, which is the only way to write about it so a reader feels it too. The expertise transfers because we build a bridge for it to cross. That bridge is the interview, and walking it is the entire transaction.

That is almost always where the book goes deep. The dumb question opens a door the expert did not know was closed. I am the stand-in for your reader, sitting in the room as a live test, and when you lose me, you lost your reader ten sentences ago and never heard the door shut.

The People Who Never Call

Some prospects never reach out at all, because they are hunting for something that does not exist. They want a ghostwriter who has run the exact kind of manufacturing plant they ran, or survived the exact trauma they survived, or worked their precise corner of their precise industry. They are looking for themselves with writing talent, and they are not going to find that person, because that person is busy running the plant or living the life, not freelancing as a writer.

That is the wrong thing to look for anyway. You do not need a writer who already lived your life.
