Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s 2023 American biographical drama depicting J. Robert Oppenheimer’s leadership of the Manhattan Project during World War II and the later 1954 security hearing that revoked his clearance.
The film tracks Oppenheimer’s career from his graduate studies through his direction of Los Alamos National Laboratory and the postwar years that culminated in his professional and political destruction. Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer. Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss. Emily Blunt plays Katherine Oppenheimer. Matt Damon plays Leslie Groves. Florence Pugh plays Jean Tatlock.
Rami Malek plays David Hill. Kenneth Branagh plays Niels Bohr. Gary Oldman plays Harry Truman. Nolan wrote the screenplay, adapting Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s 2005 biography American Prometheus. Syncopy and Atlas Entertainment produced the film on a budget of approximately one hundred million dollars, and it grossed nearly one billion worldwide.
Nolan finally made the film his puzzle-box instincts were always heading toward. I think it’s his best work, the one where all his tricks with time serve a human story, and Murphy’s face carries more dread than any explosion could. The 9 is my way of saying it comes very close to perfect, held back only by hearing scenes so crowded with names that they ask a lot of anybody who isn’t a history buff.
Oppenheimer won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film makes the case that Oppenheimer’s career represents one of the more documented examples of how scientific advancement and political consequence intersect. Oppenheimer recognizes that his work produced consequences that the political authorities later turned against him. Nolan’s direction combines biographical material with elaborate temporal structure that the film argues serves the content instead of operating as stylistic exercise.
The commercial and critical success showed that serious biographical material can achieve considerable mainstream engagement.
The Cillian Murphy Performance
Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer through a restrained interior performance that carries the full three-hour runtime, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
His Oppenheimer understands what his work will unleash and keeps pushing it forward anyway, and Murphy lets you watch both halves of that at once. His physical preparation, including documented weight loss, produces the gaunt figure from the historical photographs. The performance lets the audience wrestle with Oppenheimer’s moral position without any melodramatic nudging.
Murphy had been working with Nolan since Batman Begins (2005) including Inception (2010) and Dunkirk (2017) before Oppenheimer made him leading performer in popular recognition. His later films and his television work on Peaky Blinders (2013-2022) extended his career across multiple considerable roles. His Oppenheimer is one of the best biographical performances of recent years.

Restrained interior performance can carry extensive runtime when the character works as recognition figure. The same applies to fiction. A writer whose characters understand their own situations engages readers more deeply than melodramatic emphasis can.
The Temporal Structure
Nolan interweaves timelines, following the 1954 security hearing alongside the Manhattan Project and the earlier biographical material.
That lets the film present Oppenheimer’s career as a whole instead of a march through the years, and the hearing becomes a frame that the earlier material answers and complicates. I think it’s the smartest choice in the picture, because every triumph at Los Alamos arrives already shadowed by the humiliation waiting in that hearing room. Pulling it off takes tight coordination of performance, composition and pacing across three hours.
The temporal approach has become a reference point for biographical films that cover careers across several decades, and it shows that non-linear structure can serve the content instead of showing off. Other filmmakers can borrow the technique for different kinds of stories, provided they bring the discipline Oppenheimer required.

Non-linear biographical structure can serve depicted content when the technique reveals patterns that chronological approach would obscure. The same applies to nonfiction. A writer who organizes biographical material by theme instead of chronology can reveal patterns a straight timeline misses.
The IMAX Production
Nolan produced Oppenheimer on IMAX format that allows the scientific and political content to work at visual scale that conventional production format wouldn’t provide. The Trinity test sequence works without computer-generated imagery, showing that practical effects can produce material that digital effects typically attempt to simulate. The production approach requires real resources and committed coordination across multiple production departments.
The Trinity test is the sequence I’d rate the whole film on. Nolan does it with practical effects, and the result feels physical and awful in a way digital fire never does for me. Anyone who saw it in IMAX got something the format was built for, and it’s a case where the scale of the production earns every dollar.

Production scale can serve depicted content when the underlying material justifies the resources. The same applies to creative work. A writer who matches resources to what the material needs produces better work than one who adds scale for its own sake.
Craft Note
Oppenheimer is biographical production that addresses scientific and political content through serious approach. Oppenheimer recognizes the consequences of his work without the film offering easy moral resolution. The audience is asked to engage with the historical evidence instead of to accept settled judgment. Study it for nonfiction writing about complicated historical figures.
Is Oppenheimer as good as people say?
Yes, and then some. Cillian Murphy’s Oscar-winning performance holds three hours together on restraint alone, Nolan’s braided timelines finally give his love of structure a human purpose, and the Trinity sequence is as frightening as anything he’s put on screen.
I’d have liked the hearing scenes a little leaner, since the crowd of names gets heavy, and that’s the only thing standing between this film and a 10. The seven Academy Awards feel earned to me, Downey’s included.
