Actor: Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman spent the late 1980s and 1990s making himself unrecognisable film to film: Sid Vicious, Joe Orton, Lee Harvey Oswald, Beethoven, Dracula. The transformations were so complete that audiences frequently did not know they were watching the same actor.

The villains, in The Professional and The Fifth Element, are pitched enormously high and are among the most quoted work of the period.

He then reversed entirely, playing quiet and contained men in the Harry Potter and Dark Knight films and in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, where George Smiley barely moves for two hours.

He won Best Actor for Darkest Hour under several hours of prosthetics, which is a return to the transformation mode, and has directed one film, the autobiographical Nil by Mouth.
