Jason Clarke came from Australian television and has built a career playing capable men doing things the audience is not comfortable with.

Zero Dark Thirty gives him the interrogator in the film’s opening sequence, and the performance is deliberately reasonable, which is what makes those scenes work.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Mudbound and Chappaquiddick fill out the range, and he tends to be the most interesting thing in films that do not otherwise work.
