Christopher Nolan writes his own films, frequently with his brother Jonathan, and the scripts are constructed so that the ordering is itself the point. Memento runs two timelines toward each other, one forward in black and white and one backward in colour, meeting at the centre.

Dunkirk uses three timeframes of different lengths, a week, a day and an hour, intercut so they converge, which is a structural device with no precedent in a war film.

Oppenheimer alternates colour subjective sequences with black-and-white objective ones, telling the audience which is which and then testing whether they can hold it. He won Best Adapted Screenplay for it.
