I finally understood the genre standing on the deck of the Queen Mary during a Southern California steampunk festival. Magnificent costumes everywhere, airship captains and lady inventors, brass and goggles. Genuinely beautiful. And underneath the celebration, a 1936 ocean liner that was requisitioned as a troopship and carried over 800,000 soldiers across submarine-infested Atlantic water. A machine that cost something to build, cost more to operate, and was then pointed at a war.

That disconnect is the genre’s whole subject. History is thick in the steel of that ship, and the best steampunk feels the same weight in its own machines.

Technology as argument

I grew up on Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, then The Mysterious Island, then Master of the World. What held me was never the submarines. Nemo in the original is a dispossessed prince whose family was destroyed by colonial forces, and the Nautilus is the expression of his grief, his politics, and his decision to wage private war against the powers that unmade him.

The technology is an argument. The 1954 film understood this; James Mason played Nemo as genuinely haunted and capable of real violence, a man whose magnificent machine had a real cost. When the machine belongs to someone who has a reason for it, the genre works.

The question underneath the brass

Most steampunk writing gets distracted by the aesthetic, which is glorious, and forgets the aesthetic was never the point. The goggles and gears deliver a question the genre has been asking since Verne: who built this, who maintains it, what did it cost, and who got crushed when progress decided to modernize?
