The Client

As an author and ghostwriter with 113+ books to my name, I’ve always looked for ways to innovate and create products that resonate with niche audiences. One such project was a series of bellydance-themed coloring books based on my original belly dance photography.

The project was unique because I combined my love for photography, my interest in cultural dance, and my passion for artistic expression to create something both beautiful and marketable. The first four books in the series focused on bellydance imagery, combining intricate line drawings with culturally rich representations of the art form.

The Journey

I took on this project with the goal of offering a creative outlet that would appeal to people interested in bellydance, art, and cultural expression. I wanted to create a coloring series that was more than just a fun pastime, it would also be an educational tool for learning about bellydance and its rich cultural history.

Key steps in the project:

  • Photography Integration: I began by using my original bellydance photography as the foundation for each illustration. The images were then transformed into line art to create the intricate, yet approachable designs for coloring.
  • Cultural Education: Each coloring book was infused with a subtle educational element, providing insight into bellydance history, costumes, movements, and regional variations.
  • Market Creation: I saw a gap in the market for niche coloring books that combined both cultural themes and artistic expression. This led to the development of a unique product that spoke to an underserved audience.

The first volume of the series was well-received, selling over 750 copies in its initial launch.

The Finished Books

The first few books in the series were designed to celebrate the art and beauty of bellydance while offering a creative outlet for people of all ages. Though the specific volumes haven’t been listed here, they have been loved by my bellydancer friends and customers alike. The intricate designs of the dancers in motion, along with the diverse costumes and cultural elements, resonated deeply with the bellydance community.

The feedback from friends and fellow dancers was overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing the idea that the series wasn’t just a fun activity, but also an opportunity to learn and appreciate the rich history of bellydance.

“Richard has been submerged in Belly Dance culture and taking pics of dancers for years. I know because I am a belly dancer from birth! It's so cool to see him combine passions to come out with this book! I also love coloring and just got started on my first page. I look forward to sharing the pages with my students and introducing them to new dancers through the book.”

“Beautiful pictures to color. I know the photographer/artist personally as well as many of these dancers and I am super excited to see them immortalized like this. Currently coloring my old belly dance troupe director, Marjahni. Thank you Richard Lowe for so many wonderful depictions of my girls.”

“I have three coloring books at home that I started coloring and then I lost interest. I just got this one and I can't stop looking at the pictures! The detailing of the costuming is fun to color while creating my own look for the costumes! I am definitely going to purchase another so that I have one for the pictures and another to color!”
