Afghani Politician’s Escape Memoir: My First Pro Ghostwriting Project

Project at a Glance

  • Client: Anonymous (Afghani Politician and Infrastructure Leader)
  • Project: Memoir of political life, public works, and escape from regime change
  • Duration: ~26 weeks of interviews and writing first draft, project incomplete
  • Result: Partial manuscript drafted under agency; high-stakes legacy documentation
  • Use Case: Political memoir, historical preservation, early ghostwriting milestone
  • Location: Afghanistan

The Client

This client was no ordinary political figure—he was the architect behind Afghanistan’s road system before the Soviet invasion. A high-ranking official with a legacy of infrastructure development, he held one of the most critical posts in the country during the 1970s.

When the Soviet-backed coup occurred, he was placed under house arrest. Out of nowhere, a phone call came: “Run. Leave the country now.” That anonymous warning saved his life. He escaped, and years later, when the U.S. entered Afghanistan, it was revealed that political prisoners like him had been executed en masse — the prison he was meant to be taken to was found with mass graves containing thousands of bodies.

The Journey

He wanted to preserve his legacy in a book — a story of duty, escape, and survival. Because he didn’t speak English fluently, all interviews were conducted through his wife, who served as interpreter. We had only a narrow window of time: 12 hours of interviews over several intense days before his return to Afghanistan.

I was hired through an agency, and this was the very first ghostwriting project I took on after relocating from California and before launching The Writing King brand. It was a formative experience — high stakes, emotionally charged, and a powerful reminder of why legacy writing matters.

The (Unfinished) Book

Although the draft was never completed due to shifting priorities on the client’s end, the manuscript contained compelling chapters recounting his childhood, political ascent, and harrowing escape. It would have been an extraordinary contribution to the historical record of Afghanistan’s modern era.

Impact

  • Preserved a rare firsthand account of pre-Soviet Afghanistan’s political history
  • Captured a life story that may otherwise have been lost, even in partial form
  • Marked my first ghostwriting project — proving I could handle sensitive, high-stakes memoirs under pressure
  • Built confidence in navigating cross-cultural storytelling with an interprete
  • Laid the foundation for what would become The Writing King brand

Afterward

While the project didn’t reach publication, it marked a critical turning point in my ghostwriting career. It proved I could handle complex, high-emotion memoirs with political and cultural sensitivity — and set the foundation for everything that came after.

Impact Summary

This story was not just about politics — it was about survival, legacy, and the responsibility to preserve history. It also marked the very beginning of my journey as a full-time ghostwriter.
