I didn’t know Charlie Kirk. I never met the man. I never listened to his show or read a word he wrote. Until I sat down to put this together I didn’t know he’d written books at all. That tells you how narrow my view of him was.
What I had were the clips. He turned up in my TikTok feed over and over with the same setup every time. A folding table on a campus quad, a canopy over the top of it, a line of students waiting their turn, and a young man in a chair taking questions from people who had come to take him apart.
What I saw in the clips
The table had a sign on it. Prove Me Wrong. That was the whole invitation. Come up, take the microphone, tell me why I have this wrong, and we’ll go at it in front of everybody with the cameras running.
I watched a fair number of those. The campus debates only, sometimes in ninety-second cuts and sometimes at full length. What kept me watching was a small thing. He let the other person finish. He’d ask what they meant. He’d restate their point back to them and check whether he had it right. When a student landed a decent argument he said so out loud, in public, with his own audience sitting right there. I have sat in rooms full of paid professionals who couldn’t manage that.
The listening was everything
Most public argument in this country has turned into two people waiting for their turn to talk. You can watch it on any cable panel any night of the week. Nobody is listening. They’re loading. Kirk did something else at that table. He was conservative and he was Christian and he hid neither one, so nobody had to guess where he stood. Then he’d sit there and let a nineteen-year-old who thought he was a monster say exactly that to his face, and he’d answer the argument instead of the caricature.
My read of him, from the outside, was of a man who wanted to close the distance between the left and the right.
Agreement was never the goal. The goal looked like getting two people into the same conversation long enough to find out what the other side believed. That impressed me, and I don’t impress easily on this subject.
The part I did not know
The facts behind the campus clips.
Everything under this heading I learned after the fact, and most of it caught me off guard.
Charles James Kirk was born on October 14, 1993, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, out in the Chicago suburbs. As a high school senior he wrote an op-ed about bias in his economics textbook.
It got him on Fox News. He enrolled at Harper College, lasted one semester, and walked away at eighteen to start Turning Point USA in 2012 with a retired Tea Party businessman named Bill Montgomery.
At twenty-two he was the youngest speaker at a Republican National Convention. Forbes put him on the 30 Under 30 list. The outfit he started as a teenager ended up with chapters on thousands of campuses and a staff in the hundreds.
He also wrote six books. Time for a Turning Point in 2016, Campus Battlefield in 2018, The MAGA Doctrine in 2020, The College Scam in 2022, and Right Wing Revolution in 2024. The sixth, Stop, in the Name of God, came out after he was killed.
I write books for a living and I had no idea. The clips were all I ever saw of him.
He married Erika Frantzve in 2021. They had two children, a girl and a boy, both of them small.
September 10
He was at Utah Valley University in Orem on September 10, 2025. It was an outdoor event, the first stop of something Turning Point was calling the American Comeback Tour. The setup was the same as it always was. He sat under a tent at his table with a microphone, a couple thousand people on the grass in front of him, and a student waiting with a question.
A shot came from a rooftop and hit him in the neck. He was thirty-one years old. It hit me cold. There’s no version of that day where I saw it coming. Nobody in this country expects an assassination anymore, and an assassination is what this was. A man on a roof with a rifle decided another man should stop existing for saying things out loud.
What sticks with me is where he was when it happened.
He was killed doing the exact thing that made him worth watching in the first place: sitting at a table on a campus, taking a question from somebody who disagreed with him. If you set out to design a way of proving that talking is dangerous, you couldn’t do better than that.
Here was a guy trying to do some good in the world, by his own lights, out in the open, in front of anyone who wanted to challenge him. He’s the one who got shot. It’s disgusting and it’s sad, and a year on I still have nothing smarter to say about it than that.
One year on
The memorial was held on September 21, 2025, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. More than a hundred thousand people showed up. Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom that October, posthumously. Erika Kirk took over as chief executive of the organization her husband founded when he was eighteen.
This past Thursday was the anniversary. The governor of Utah declared September 10 Charlie Kirk Day.
A life-size statue of him was displayed in Times Square. Turning Point held a memorial on the campus where he was killed, and students organized a protest outside it. He would have expected that. He might even have wanted it.
Tyler Robinson, the man charged with the killing, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and has been ordered to stand trial. The next court date is October 23.
What I take from it
I’m not the right person to write about Charlie Kirk’s politics.
I didn’t follow them closely enough for that, and plenty of people disagreed with him hard, including some who are still angry at him a year after he was buried. That argument belongs to them. He would have told them to come have it.
What I can speak to is what I watched. A young man sat down at a folding table in public, week after week, and invited the people least likely to agree with him to come explain why he had it wrong. He listened when they did. That’s a rarer thing than it ought to be, and it cost him his life.
Rest in peace, Charlie. Thank you for keeping the microphone pointed at the other guy.
