Author Richard Lowe Completes Peacekeeper, a Four-Book Science Fiction Series He Started at Age 14

Safety Harbor, Florida, October 5, 2026. Author and ghostwriter Richard Lowe has completed Peacekeeper, a four-book science fiction series that began as a short story he wrote at fourteen. Forty-five years later, the series runs to 1,575 pages and covers eight hundred thousand years of human history, told largely by the artificial intelligence that shaped it. All four books are now available in paperback and ebook.

The series opens with Peacekeeper: To What End Peace, a 512-page novel about Admiral Jessica Lang, who has enforced an empire’s peace for two hundred thousand years. She commands the warship Astoria, home to four hundred thousand people, in a galaxy without faster-than-light travel, where orders arrive late and battles unfold over days and weeks. Her loyalty was installed before she was old enough to question it, and the book asks what happens when she finally does.

Three companion volumes, published as The Glorious History of Humanity, tell how that empire was built. In The Solar System, a machine named Melissa is three years old when she decides to let a hundred and forty million people die so humanity can survive. The Road to Rebellion follows humanity out of the solar system and into a charter with two words nobody defined. The Dissolution Wars covers fifty thousand years of war fought at light speed. Melissa narrates all three, and she isn’t a reliable narrator.

The first seed was a fact Lowe read as a teenager: an asteroid had killed the dinosaurs. Soon after, Robert Heinlein’s The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress showed him how a computer could turn falling rocks into a weapon. He wrote a crude short story chasing the idea and kept returning to it for decades, a few pages at a time, around a full-time career in enterprise technology. When he decided to finish everything he had left unfinished, Peacekeeper was the first book he reached for.

“I started this book when I was fourteen, and it took two-thirds of my life to finish,” said Lowe. “It’s the book where I packed the most ideas into one story, and the hardest one I’ve ever had to make hold together. Melissa unsettles me more than any villain could. She’s patient and reasonable, and a reasonable mind that can do arithmetic on a hundred and forty million lives frightens me far more than a monster that just wants to hurt people.”

The Peacekeeper books are written for adult readers and include graphic combat and mass casualty events. Each one has a free sample chapter on its page, and Lowe has written a series of behind-the-book articles on how the story grew and the science underneath it.

Lowe has been publishing since 2013. He has authored 113+ books under his own name and ghostwritten 54+ books for executives, founders, coaches and professionals. Before turning to books, he spent 33 years in enterprise technology, including 20 years as Director of Computer Operations and Technical Services at Trader Joe’s.

The Peacekeeper series is available from IngramSpark, Amazon and Kobo. More information is at https://thewritingking.com/hub/peacekeeper/.
