I expect prestige biopics to wring me out, and this one mostly leaves me alone to feel what I feel, which I respect. What moves me is Jane. The film is built around her, and I find the marriage far more gripping than the physics.

I’m stunned by how much he gets out of a face and a pair of eyes once the body stops cooperating, and he keeps Hawking a recognizable person from the first scene to the last. The Oscar was deserved. The physical detail never crowds out the man inside it.

Redmayne had been working as a character actor in films like My Week with Marilyn (2011) and Les Misérables (2012) before The Theory of Everything made him a leading man. His later entries in the genre including The Danish Girl (2015), the Fantastic Beasts series, and his theatrical work extended his career across multiple major roles. Is The Theory of Everything worth watching?

I give The Theory of Everything an 8, and a warm one. Redmayne’s Oscar-winning work is as committed a physical performance as any biopic I can name, and Felicity Jones gives Jane the weight the film’s perspective depends on. Marsh’s restraint keeps the film honest. It stops short of a 9 because that same restraint keeps the marriage at arm’s length when I want it closer. Recommended if you care about scientific history, biographical drama or committed acting.
