David Thewlis won Best Actor at Cannes for Naked, playing Johnny, a man of genuine intelligence and complete cruelty who talks continuously for two hours. It is one of the most demanding lead performances in British cinema.

He then worked steadily in a range that includes Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, The Theory of Everything and Fargo, where his Varga is quietly one of the more unsettling television villains.

He voiced the puppet in Anomalisa, which requires an entire performance through animation.

He has also written two novels, and works regularly with Mike Leigh in the improvisational method that produced Naked.
