John Travolta plays Gotti. Spencer Lofranco plays his son John Gotti Jr. Kelly Preston plays Gotti’s wife Victoria. Stacy Keach plays Gambino underboss Aniello Dellacroce. Leo Rossi and Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay. Emmett/Furla Oasis Films produced the film after multiple production delays and director changes across approximately a decade. The work received a notorious zero percent Rotten Tomatoes score and major critical hostility upon release.
The work fails on every measure. The screenplay generates timeline jumps without coherent organization.

Gotti is the kind of movie that makes me feel sorry for everyone in it and sorrier for myself. A decade of development, three directors, and what reaches the screen plays like somebody shuffled the reels and dared the audience to sort them out. I give it a 2, and that’s generous, because Travolta shows up ready to work and deserves a point for trying.

This production can’t hide its money problems. The visual effects, the period reconstruction and the supporting cast all look like they were paid for out of a coat pocket. I spend most of the film feeling the seams of a script patched by too many hands, and that’s a miserable thing to be noticing during a mob picture. The Travolta Commitment
John Travolta’s performance commits to mob biopic conventions despite the surrounding material’s failures. The character requires sustained New York accent work, specific physical presence, and committed engagement with the depicted criminal authority. Travolta delivers all three despite the screenplay’s inability to develop the character at sufficient depth.
Travolta is the one person here doing his job, and I feel for him. The accent is there, the physical presence is there, the sense of criminal authority is there, and the script hands him nothing to build on. Watching him commit this hard to a screenplay this shapeless is like watching a man tile a bathroom in a house that’s on fire. He deserved material that matched the effort.

Should you skip Gotti?
Gotti gets a 2 from me, and Travolta’s effort is the only thing keeping it off the bottom of the scale. A decade of development trouble produced a timeline that jumps around like a scratched DVD and a script that can’t dig into the man at its center. The only reasons to watch are finishing Travolta’s filmography or studying how a biopic falls apart. Anyone who wants the real John Gotti should go to the A&E documentary Gotti: Godfather and Son (2018) or the 1996 Gotti with Armand Assante.
