It’s a 10, and I’d call it the best romance of its decade. The premise, Kaufman’s Oscar-winning screenplay, Gondry’s direction and the two lead performances all pull in the same direction, and there isn’t a scene I’d cut. It takes a clever idea and uses it to say something painful and true about why people keep choosing each other. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s ever loved someone and wished for five minutes that they could forget them.
