Seventy-four thousand years ago the Toba supervolcano put enough material into the sky to cut sunlight across Eurasia and hold the cold in place past the point where anything could plan around it. In 69 AD, four men claimed Rome inside twelve months and three of them died for it.
Both books work the same way. Get the conditions right, put people in them who do not know how it turns out, and follow what the conditions do to them.
