A mapper finds a projector in the basement of a condemned building. A scholarship student picks a warm phone off a bench outside the student union. A deserter with a warrant on his name walks east into a hole under a white house at the edge of a forest.
None of these three is a chosen one. They’re people with working methods, and the method is the only equipment they take with them. Ari keeps a notebook. Corvin keeps a lamp lit and a rope tied off. Brit keeps count of what she’s willing to do.
What comes back isn’t the same as what went in, and in one of these books that’s a horror story.
