Mark Strong spent years in British television before a run of film antagonists in the late 2000s, in Stardust, Sherlock Holmes, RocknRolla and Kick-Ass, which established him as a dependable presence.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy gave him the best of the serious work, and 1917 gave him a single scene of quiet advice that lands harder than the surrounding spectacle.
The Kingsman films let him play warmth, which the villain work had obscured, and his death scene in the first is the emotional beat the film runs on.
He trained at Bristol Old Vic, works regularly on stage, and won an Olivier for A View from the Bridge.
