Andrew Stanton co-wrote every Pixar feature of the studio’s first decade, including all four Toy Story films, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc and WALL-E, and functioned as the studio’s principal story voice.

His stated rule is to make the audience assemble the meaning instead of delivering it, and WALL-E’s near-silent first act is the test case. He has said the hardest thing was persuading the studio that forty minutes without dialogue would hold.

Finding Nemo won him a nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and its structure, a parent and child journey told in parallel, is more carefully built than the finished film makes obvious.
