Downfall is Oliver Hirschbiegel’s 2004 German historical drama depicting the final days of Adolf Hitler in the Berlin Führerbunker during April and May 1945.
Bruno Ganz plays Hitler. Alexandra Maria Lara plays Traudl Junge, Hitler’s young secretary whose 2002 memoir provided source material. Bernd Eichinger wrote the screenplay, adapting it from Junge’s memoir and from Joachim Fest’s 2002 historical study Inside Hitler’s Bunker. Constantin Film produced the film, and it was released in Germany in September 2004. The work was Germany’s submission for the 2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The original scene shows Hitler’s response to news that the Steiner counter-attack won’t happen, and Ganz plays the rage with total commitment. The meme has a sour side. It’s funny, and it also trains people to giggle at a scene that’s frightening in context, a man screaming at his generals while the city is shelled over his head.

Is Downfall as good as people say?
Downfall is the German historical film of its decade I’d reach for first. Ganz shows Hitler as a specific man instead of a moral abstraction, the bunker turns institutional collapse into something you watch happen room by room, and the Junge framing spreads the guilt across everyone who kept the machine running. I’d put it in front of anyone interested in German cinema, historical drama, or films willing to face morally difficult material.
It gets a 9 from me because it had the nerve to make Hitler human and the discipline never to make him sympathetic, and very few films about this period manage both. Go in knowing it’s hard to watch, because the film refuses to look away from what happened in that bunker. That refusal is exactly what makes it worth the discomfort.
