Jon Watts made two small independent films, Clown and Cop Car, before Marvel hired him for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Cop Car is a lean thriller with Kevin Bacon and two children, and the tonal control in it is what got him the job.
His Spider-Man trilogy treats the character as an actual teenager, borrowing structure from John Hughes instead of from superhero convention, and Homecoming is closer to a high school comedy than to an action film for much of its running time.
No Way Home resolved three separate film series at once and became one of the highest-grossing films ever released.
