Director: David Fincher

David Fincher came from music videos and advertising, and the precision shows: he shoots enormous numbers of takes, controls colour to a degree that borders on obsessive, and moves the camera only when the movement means something. Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network and Gone Girl are all recognisably his within a shot.

Zodiac is the most complete statement of what interests him, which is process and obsession, not resolution. The film runs for two and a half hours and refuses to solve the case, because the record does not solve it either.

He was an early and committed adopter of digital capture, and his procedural films are unusually accurate about how investigation actually feels, which is to say slow, clerical and frequently futile.
