Description:

TL;DR

Mark Sullivan’s 2017 novel based on the life of Pino Lella, an Italian teenager who guided Jews over the Alps and then spied on a Nazi general as his driver. Sullivan spent about a decade on it, and it became a number one bestseller.

In 1943 Pino Lella was seventeen and mostly interested in girls and music. By the end of the war he had guided Jewish refugees over the Alps into Switzerland, driven for a powerful German general in Italy and passed what he saw to the Resistance.

Almost nobody knew. Mark Sullivan heard the story in 2006 and spent about ten years turning it into Beneath a Scarlet Sky.

What is Beneath a Scarlet Sky about?

Pino’s war. When Allied bombs hit Milan, his parents send him to Casa Alpina, a Catholic boys’ school in the mountains run by Father Luigi Re. The priest has a secret: he’s helping Jews escape to Switzerland, and he needs a strong young climber to lead them over the passes. Pino makes the crossing again and again, through the winter, with refugees who’ve never seen a mountain.

Then his family forces him into the German army, hoping a uniform will keep him off the front. An accident puts him behind the wheel for General Hans Leyers, who runs war production in northern Italy. Pino becomes the general’s driver.

And a spy. Everything he hears in that car goes to the Resistance.

There’s a love story too, with a widow named Anna, and the end of the war is brutal in ways the reader doesn’t expect.

Is Beneath a Scarlet Sky a true story?

Mostly. Sullivan has said about ninety percent of it happened. He interviewed Pino at length in Italy, traveled the routes and dug through archives, but many of the records were destroyed in the war and many witnesses were gone, so he had to fill gaps with dramatized scenes and conversation. So it’s published as a novel. Some historians have questioned how much of Pino’s account can be documented. Sullivan has been open about the limits of what he could verify.

How well did Beneath a Scarlet Sky sell?

It reached number one on the Wall Street Journal and USA Today lists and sold well over a million copies. Film rights went early, with Tom Holland attached to play Pino.

Who is Mark Sullivan?

A bestselling novelist and a frequent collaborator. He co-writes the Private series with James Patterson, and he’s among the writers I list when people ask who the leading collaborators are. He’s strong on historical and investigative work, and this book is the proof. For anyone writing a family war story, it’s also a model: a man nobody had heard of, a story he hadn’t told in sixty years and a writer willing to spend a decade getting it onto the page.
