R. F. Kuang is an American author of fantasy and literary fiction, born Rebecca F. Kuang in Guangzhou, China, in 1996, and raised in the United States. A scholar as well as a novelist, she has studied Chinese history at Georgetown and Cambridge and pursued doctoral work at Yale, and her academic background deeply informs her fiction.
Kuang made her debut at a young age with The Poppy War in 2018, a grimdark fantasy trilogy inspired by twentieth-century Chinese history, including the Second Sino-Japanese War. The series was praised for its unflinching depiction of war, power, and trauma, and established her as a major new voice in the genre.
She reached an even wider audience with Babel, a dark academia fantasy set in an alternate Oxford that examines colonialism, language, and translation, which won the Nebula Award and the Locus Award. Her satirical novel Yellowface, a sharp commentary on race, ambition, and the publishing industry, became a major bestseller and marked her move into contemporary literary fiction.
Still early in her career, Kuang has already won significant acclaim and a devoted readership for work that combines rigorous historical and intellectual engagement with propulsive storytelling. She is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and accomplished young authors working today.
