The Card Counter (2021)
Schrader's 2021 gambling drama. Oscar Isaac as an Abu Ghraib veteran on the poker circuit.
Oscar Isaac trained at Juilliard and broke through in Inside Llewyn Davis, performing all the music live on camera, playing a folk singer whose talent is real and whose personality prevents anything coming of it.
Ex Machina gave him Nathan, a tech billionaire whose menace is entirely social, and the dance sequence is the strangest and best thing in the film.
He then took Star Wars and Dune, and Moon Knight gave him a dissociative identity performance across a television series.
He is Guatemalan-American, works regularly on stage including Hamlet, and has a long friendship with Isaac Hempstead Wright’s generation of the Star Wars cast.
