John Rhys-Davies played Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, and Gimli across the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Gimli prosthetics caused a severe allergic reaction that damaged his skin, and the makeup had to be modified repeatedly across the shoot.
He is Welsh, was born in Salisbury and raised partly in Tanzania, and also voiced Treebeard. Sliders gave him a long television lead, and he has a booming voice used extensively in narration.
