Jeremy Renner was nominated for Best Actor for The Hurt Locker and Best Supporting Actor for The Town in consecutive years, which is an unusual pair to arrive at together after a decade of small parts.
The Hurt Locker performance is built on a man who is only comfortable in the most dangerous situation available, and the supermarket scene at the end says everything without dialogue.
He then joined both the Marvel and Mission: Impossible franchises, and the individual work became harder to find.
Wind River is the best of the later films. He was severely injured by a snowplough in 2023 and has spoken publicly about the recovery.
