Iman Vellani was cast as Kamala Khan from an open call while still in high school, having sent an audition tape on her aunt’s suggestion.
The character is a Marvel fan within the fiction, and Vellani is a genuine one, which the production used deliberately. Ms Marvel and The Marvels followed, and she has co-written a Marvel comic, which is an unusual crossover for a screen performer.
