Dana Andrews played the detective in Laura who falls in love with a portrait of a woman he believes is dead, and The Best Years of Our Lives gave him a returning bombardier reduced to a soda counter job. He was a serious alcoholic who later made public service films about it, which was unusual for a star of his standing.
