The Departed (2006)
Scorsese's 2006 Boston crime thriller. Two moles, one in the mob, one in the police.
William Monahan won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Departed, transposing the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs to South Boston and restructuring it substantially in the process.
He also wrote Kingdom of Heaven, whose director’s cut restores a great deal of material that clarifies the film’s argument about faith and tolerance, and Body of Lies.
His dialogue has a regional specificity that actors respond to, and the profanity in The Departed is doing characterisation instead of decoration.
