The Marvels (2023) Review
The catastrophic $237 million loss that confirmed audience withdrawal. Body-swap premise, Captain Marvel continuation, and franchise collapse.
Nia DaCosta wrote Little Woods, a small drama about two sisters in a North Dakota oil town, dealing with healthcare access and the economics of a place the country stopped attending to.
She co-wrote Candyman with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, reframing the original around gentrification and the erasure of a neighbourhood, with the shadow-puppet sequences carrying the historical material.
She also has a co-writing credit on The Marvels. The independent work is where her own voice is clearest and Little Woods deserves more attention than it received.
