Writer: Leigh Brackett

Leigh Brackett was an established science fiction novelist when Howard Hawks hired her to adapt The Big Sleep with William Faulkner, reportedly on the assumption from her prose that she was a man.

She wrote Rio Bravo, El Dorado and The Long Goodbye, and her hardboiled dialogue is a substantial part of why those films sound the way they do.

Her last work was a first draft of The Empire Strikes Back, delivered shortly before her death from cancer. Kasdan’s script departs from it substantially, but she retains a credit.
