Jay Presson Allen adapted The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie for stage and screen, wrote Cabaret and Marnie, and was one of very few women working consistently as a screenwriter at that level in the 1960s and 1970s.

Cabaret was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and restructured the stage musical considerably, removing songs that were not diegetic so that every number happens on the club stage.

She also wrote Prince of the City and produced for both stage and film, and worked with Hitchcock on Marnie, an experience she discussed with some ambivalence.
