Daniel Waters wrote Heathers as a spec script intended for Stanley Kubrick, and the invented teen slang in it, along with the willingness to treat murder as a comic escalation, made it the most influential teen film of its era.

He followed it with Hudson Hawk and Batman Returns, the latter of which is considerably stranger than a studio superhero film had been allowed to be.

His dialogue is heavily stylised and does not survive being played naturalistically, which is why the imitations of Heathers rarely work.
