Daisuke Tengan is the son of director Shohei Imamura and has written extensively for Takashi Miike, including Audition and 13 Assassins.

Audition is the notable one. The script withholds its genre for an hour, playing as a gentle story about a widower dating again, and then turns without warning. That structural bait is entirely a writing decision and it is why the film retains its reputation.

13 Assassins is a remake of a 1963 Eiichi Kudo film, and Tengan’s version expands the final battle to nearly an hour.
