Most people who want a book have a date in mind before they have a manuscript: a conference, a retirement, a launch, a parent’s birthday. This calculator turns that date into a schedule. Pick the kind of book, the month you can start or the month you need it, and how you plan to publish, and it shows when each stage lands.

The numbers come from my current schedule. A ghostwritten book runs 4 to 8 months from first interview to final manuscript, and an AI-assisted book runs three to six months. Change a stage and the dates move with it.

Book Finish-Date Calculator

What the calculator counts

It adds the stages end to end. The optional first stage is the Book Discovery Intensive, which takes 30 days and settles what the book is before anyone writes a chapter. Then comes the manuscript itself. Then publishing: four to six weeks through my publishing service, or 12 to 18 months from delivery to release with a traditional publisher.

Every stage is a range, and so is the answer. The quick end assumes interviews happen on schedule and drafts come back with comments within a few days. Real projects drift toward the slow end, which is why the deadline mode tells you to start early enough to cover it.

How far ahead should you start a book for a deadline?

Work back from the slow end of every stage. A book you need at a conference next fall, published through a traditional house, needed to start well over a year ago, and the calculator will say so plainly. Self-publishing is the route that fits a hard date, because the time between final manuscript and a book in hand is measured in weeks.

If the date is too close, three things buy time back: a shorter book, the self-publishing route, or an AI-assisted book with its shorter schedule. For the full picture of how a ghostwritten project runs, see my ghostwriting service.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start a book to have it out by a specific date?
Count back from the date using the slow end of every stage. For a ghostwritten book that is 4 to 8 months for the manuscript plus the publishing time, which is four to six weeks when self-publishing. The calculator on this page does that arithmetic for you.
Can a ghostwritten book be finished faster?
Yes, within limits. Fast feedback on drafts and interviews that happen on schedule keep a project at the quick end of the range. A shorter book or an AI-assisted book, which runs three to six months, shortens it further.
How much time does self-publishing add after the manuscript is done?
Through my publishing service it takes four to six weeks from a finished manuscript to a book available on the major platforms. A traditional publisher usually takes 12 to 18 months from delivery to release.
Does a Book Discovery Intensive delay the start of a book?
It adds 30 days at the front. In return the book’s subject, audience and structure are settled before the writing starts, which keeps the manuscript stage from wandering.
