William Heinemann

William Heinemann

William Heinemann is a British publishing house founded in London in 1890 by William Heinemann. From its earliest years it published distinguished literary fiction and nonfiction, quickly establishing itself as a leading house and attracting many of the most prominent authors of its day.

Over its long history Heinemann published an exceptional list of writers, including major novelists and Nobel laureates, and many works that became classics of English literature. Among its notable publications is Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange, issued in 1962.

The house was known for its literary prestige and its broad influence on twentieth-century British publishing. It also played an important role through series and educational imprints over the decades.

Now part of the Penguin Random House group, the William Heinemann name continues as a literary imprint. Its catalog reflects more than a century of distinguished publishing in Britain.
