While other executives optimize quarterly earnings, Warden has to think in decades. The Air Force awarded Northrop the B-21 contract in October 2015, and the first bomber flew in November 2023. Sentinel will take years more. “A plant doesn’t get built in a day. It’s a multi-year investment,” she told T. Rowe Price.
Long programs carry long risks. Northrop recorded a $1.56 billion loss provision on early B-21 production in 2023 and another $477 million in the first quarter of 2025. In July 2024 the Pentagon said Sentinel would cost 81% more than its original $77.7 billion estimate. Warden still grew sales to $42 billion in 2025 and backlog to $95.7 billion. That’s the job. Keep the long bets alive when the short-term numbers hurt.

Warden’s background is business and operations. She holds a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University and an MBA from George Washington University, and she built her career running businesses at GE, General Dynamics and Northrop. Her edge is knowing what to ask. “It’s really about building credibility through asking the right questions,” she said in the T. Rowe Price interview.

Warden didn’t build Northrop’s position from scratch. She sharpened it. Defense contractors compete for government contracts on cost, schedule and capability, and Northrop has won some of the biggest programs of the era.
Northrop Grumman won the B-21 Raider contract in October 2015, beating a joint Boeing and Lockheed Martin bid, and under Warden the bomber made its first flight in November 2023.
Winning is only half of it. Northrop reported $4.18 billion in net earnings in 2025, about level with 2024, even after taking another B-21 loss provision. The backlog says the Pentagon keeps coming back.
