Terence Young directed Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Thunderball, and his contribution to the Bond franchise is usually described as having invented the character’s manner. Accounts from the production hold that he taught Sean Connery how to order, dress and move, effectively performing the role for the actor to absorb.

From Russia with Love is the most restrained entry in the series, closer to a Cold War thriller than to the spectacle that followed, and it remains the one many admirers name first.

Outside Bond he directed Wait Until Dark, a home-invasion thriller with a blind protagonist that generates its best sequence by turning out the lights entirely.
