The films are professionally made and deliberately unshowy. Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man and Rush are all built on procedure and performance instead of a visual identity, and Apollo 13 in particular is a masterclass in generating suspense from an outcome the audience already knows.
He won Best Director and Best Picture for A Beautiful Mind. The criticism is that the style is anonymous, and the defence is that anonymity is what lets the material come first.
