Raoul Walsh directed White Heat, High Sierra and The Roaring Twenties, and had earlier played John Wilkes Booth in The Birth of a Nation. He lost an eye in a car accident during a shoot and wore an eyepatch for the rest of a career spanning fifty years and more than a hundred and thirty films.
