Pete Docter joined Pixar as its third animator and has directed Monsters Inc, Up, Inside Out and Soul, which is the most consistently ambitious run at the studio. Each takes something that resists visualisation and finds a way to draw it.

Up opens with a four-minute wordless marriage sequence that most animated features would not attempt, and Inside Out builds a working model of adolescent depression that child psychologists have used since.

He became Pixar’s chief creative officer in 2018 and has won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature three times.
