Gary Trousdale co-directed Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis: The Lost Empire with Kirk Wise, the three films that bracket the peak and the end of the Disney Renaissance.
Hunchback is the one worth arguing about. It contains a genuinely frightening antagonist, an explicit treatment of religious hypocrisy, and a protagonist who does not get the girl, all inside a film with comic gargoyles attached by the studio.
He moved to DreamWorks afterward and directed shorts and television, and the hand-drawn feature form he worked in effectively ended.
