Chris McKay came up through Robot Chicken as a director and editor, which is an unusual foundation, and brought that comic rhythm to The Lego Batman Movie, a parody that is also a functional Batman story about isolation.

His live-action work, The Tomorrow War and Renfield, has been less successful, though Renfield’s willingness to play a Dracula story as workplace comedy is at least a distinctive swing.

The animation background shows in how tightly his gags are cut, which is a different discipline from live-action comedy.
