Buster Keaton directed and starred in The General, Sherlock Jr and Steamboat Bill Jr, performing every stunt himself, and his physical comedy and sight gags are generally regarded as the finest in silent cinema. He lost creative control when MGM signed him and spent decades in decline before a late reappraisal.
