Alejandro Amenabar directed Thesis and Open Your Eyes in Spain before The Others, an English-language ghost story with Nicole Kidman that withholds its situation completely and rewards a second viewing more than most films of its kind.

Open Your Eyes was remade as Vanilla Sky. The Sea Inside, about the right-to-die case of Ramon Sampedro, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

He also composes his own scores, which is rare, and the music in The Others is doing a substantial amount of the restraint.
