Brandon Royal

Brandon Royal is a Canadian writer best known for the Little Color Books series, a set of concise, principle-based teaching guides on writing, grammar, math, reasoning, and probability. The flagship volume, The Little Red Writing Book, lays out twenty principles for clear and effective writing in roughly 140 pages, with examples and exercises that fit a quick-reference format. It is followed by The Little Gold Grammar Book, The Little Green Math Book, The Little Blue Reasoning Book, and The Little Purple Probability Book.

The approach grew out of Royal's years working for Kaplan Educational Centers in Hong Kong, where he taught test preparation to students of widely varying backgrounds and language proficiencies. He distilled what worked into compact reference volumes built around a small number of repeatable principles, the idea being that strong writers, grammarians, and problem-solvers share a finite set of habits that can be taught and practiced. The combined Deluxe Edition of The Little Red Writing Book, which pairs the writing and grammar volumes in one book, has been adopted by writing instructors and reading groups for the same reason.

A graduate of the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, Royal began writing seriously after completing additional writing courses at Harvard University. His books are published by Maven Publishing and have been reviewed in Time Asia magazine, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Midwest Book Review, The Asian Review of Books, Choice Reviews Online, and Asia Times Online.

Royal is a five-time winner of the International Book Awards, a seven-time gold medalist at the President's Book Awards, and recipient of the Educational Book of the Year award from the Book Publishers Association of Alberta. His work has also been recognized in the Ben Franklin Book Awards, the Global eBook Awards, the IPPY Awards, the USA Book News Best Book Awards, and the Foreword magazine Book of the Year Awards.
