He lost most of his teeth in an accident and used the dentures selectively, removing them to play characters decades older than he was, which is how he spent his thirties playing old men.

Sergeant York, My Darling Clementine, Rio Bravo and To Have and Have Not fill out an enormous filmography, and he worked repeatedly for Howard Hawks.
