Actor: Trevor Howard

Trevor Howard is best known for Brief Encounter, in which almost nothing happens and the emotional cost is enormous, and the film is the standard example of English suppression as a dramatic mode.

The Third Man gave him a brisk military officer, and he worked constantly afterward in Mutiny on the Bounty, Gandhi and Ryan’s Daughter, the last of which earned considerable praise even as the film was attacked.

He was nominated once, for Sons and Lovers.

He served in the Royal Artillery during the war, and his publicised claim to have served with the Airborne was later shown to be untrue, which he never addressed.
