Takeshi Kitano is a director, comedian and actor who is enormously famous in Japan as a television personality under the name Beat Takeshi. Hana-bi won the Golden Lion at Venice, and Sonatine and Zatoichi are the essential films. Ghost in the Shell gave him an American credit in which he speaks only Japanese.
